The Tana Toraja is a area situated in South Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is a kind of picturesque group mostly known as Torajans. For the Toraja people death has a great significance and it is kind of great celebration too. It is a celebration where all the members of the deceased and alive are gathered together along with the entire villagers do the same and enjoy this party. It is a kind of world most complex funeral traditions have been practiced over many centuries.
Trojan has approximately 650,000 populations where most of them are Christians, others are Muslims and a minority named as Aluk Todolo (Way of the Ancestors), which are most visible during funeral festivities and burial customs.
Till to the 19th century, Torajans lived in their own autonomous villages and there they practiced animism. They were actually separated from the outside world after the Dutch missionaries reached them and converted them to Christianity.
During their life they work hard but unlike other societies they do not spend much rather they save a good number of money left to the other members to celebrate their funeral occasion as it is too much costly. Such funeral actually shows their family status.
When a life of Torajan end with death but he/she is not buried and the family members of the deceased are required to hold a series of funeral ceremonies which is called as Rambu Soloq over many days. Until the family completed the ceremonies the death person is not buried and considered that seriously ill and kept under the same roof with his or her family. To them the death person is sleeping but not truly death.
In the ceremony the family members are obliged to slaughter buffaloes and pigs and later the meat is distributed to the funeral visitors according to their position in the community.
Though at present they are getting modern but the ancient Torajan belief system is that the spirit of a dead person should return to his birthplace by walking on themselves so they can accompany to the other alive members.
Though the their life end with the death but to them literally they are alive and enhance their joy during the celebration. So it is a place where life does not end with death.
