North Korea spokesperson on Wednesday declared that it has successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test, hours after what seems to be an artificial earthquake was detected close to the nuclear test site.
The U.S. and Japan have called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council after North Korea claimed to have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb, a senior UN official told in different media.
By succeeding in the H-bomb test, North Korea “joined the advanced ranks of nuclear weapons states possessed of even H-bomb”, it said. Seoul denounced Pyongyang’s hydrogen bomb test as a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions. Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam said: “North Korea’s provocation is in clear violation of Security Council resolutions and a serious challenge to international peace and security.”
In the meantime, the White House said it can’t affirm North Korea’s cases of a fruitful H-bomb test, however denounces any infringement of the UN resolutions banning Pyongyang from atomic tests. We have reliably clarified that we won’t acknowledge it as an atomic state.
We will keep on securing our partners in the locale, including South Korea, and will react properly to any the incitements of North Korea, it said in an announcement. North Korea’s declaration came as a 5.1-size seismic tremor was distinguished in a territory 49 km north of Kilju, home to North Korea’s atomic test site.
A month ago, North Korean pioneer Kim Jong-un said Pyongyang has turned into an “effective atomic weapons state prepared to explode an independent A-bomb and H-bomb”. It was the first occasion when that Kim freely asserted the improvement of a hydrogen bomb, which is considerably more effective than the traditional atomic weapons.
South Korea and North Korea finished their rare high-level talks on December 12 with no assertion over how to retouch their strained relations.
